Application Period for ITP 2010

The application period to Information Technology Program (ITP) has started.
ITP is an intensive summer program with world class lecturers.

The program consists of two simultaneous subprograms with different areas of concentration. The subprograms in 2010 are:

- Business & Technologies
- Strategy & Experience Design

As in previous years, both subprograms are worth 24 ECTS credits and are recognized as a minor subject in the M.Sc. program at School of Economics. ITP studies can be extended to 30 ECTS with extra work and are thus recognized as a minor subject in the B.Sc. program at School of Economics.

ITP 2010 will take place between May 17th and August 27th, 2010.

APPLICATIONS
The deadline for the applications is Friday, March 12th, 2010.

More information about the program and application procedure can be found from ITP website.

Article on ITP at HSE website

We’re glad to let you know that HSE has published an interesting article on this year’s ITP, where they interview two ITP students on their experiences of the program.

Check out the article here. It’s available both in Finnish and in English.

How to play good poker! (secret tips)

Hello there,

Some of the ITP students had a poker session yesterday evening, and as a last man smiling I am compelled to gloat even further. (I won the second round in Texas no-limit, lost the first one, because I had bad luck – only way to lose…)

I also beat the KY and HSE poker champion Lauri Ahonen, and continuing the long tradition of poker player trash talk (read his blog at http://yksinvaltias.kyweb.fi/2008/03/14/all-in-ahonen-takes-down-finance/ where he even compares himself to Cinderella!) I am happy to anounce that by simple logical reasoning, I must beat all of the people in finance subject club tournament, because I beat the guy who beat the others!

So, you might be wondering about the secrets of good poker playing. Here are 3 of mine:

1. – (*)

2. – (**)

3. – (***)

* You really think I’d tell my best secret?
** You really think I’d tell my second-best secret?
*** You really think I’d tell my last secret?

Ok, here’s one tip anyway: Never fold on the turn card, and never on the 2nd turn card.
(For those who don’t know the poker slang, “turn” is the fourth card and “2nd turn” is the fifth.

With kind regards to those whose money I acquired,

Tuomas T. Hämäläinen

PS But I just got lucky this time- that’s gambling! (Poker is all about luck.)

Here are some photos from the Holiday party. Thank you for everyone from fun evening and lets get things going now after the relaxing holiday.

CM: Preliminary exercise for friday

This week we will start the php + mysql course and you should familiarize yourselves with xhtml forms. We’ll be passing data from one page to another so it is essential that you know how to create a form.

The exercise:

Create a form with the following fields:

First name (text field)
Last name (text field)
Email (text field)
Address (text field)
City (text field)
Zip (text field)
Id (hidden field)
Image (file field) (This one is optional)
Submit button

Remember to validate the form at http://validator.w3.org/

It should look something like this. No need for styling, though.

form_example.jpg

Submit the file to:

public/cm/cm3/returnbin/yourlastname/preliminary/form.html

e.g.

public/cm/cm3/returnbin/virtanen/preliminary/form.html

BONUS: Validate the form with javascript so that all the text fields must contain something and email address is a valid email address. Hint: in DW go to Window -> Behaviors. You’ll receive extra points for functional validation.

Grading: Pass/Fail (extra points possible!)
Deadline: NOTE! The deadline is friday, before class
