Enthusiasm, practical work, shared goals, good friends, hard work, big emotions and a magnificent experience. A long list I would say. But those were the words I first came up with, when I began to remember my summer in the ITP SED subprogram in 2010.
Coming up with so many descriptions is obviously a sign that the course affected me deeply. It improved my approach to working together in a team and gave me a wider perspective on the business environment we all work in and, most importantly, will work in the future. SED courses gave me a good base to learn about new media planning and tools and taught me how to use the skills I learned in the courses in practice. The feeling that you had learned something new that you can really utilize directly was very rewarding.
The role of the business case was significant during the summer. It was reflected in all the content of the courses and provided us with a field where we could practice our skills. Working on something meaningful that your client really needed and was going to use felt good but it was sometimes really hard too. We really had to do our best every day. Also, throughout the whole summer the ITP staff did their very best to provide us with all the facilities and help that we needed. We were privileged.
I came to the ITP-program from Turku School of Economics where studying is all about participating in the lectures, reading and working on group assignments, just like in any other business school in Finland. Still, before the ITP course I had never faced such an intensive atmosphere. The ITP class had a strong we-spirit and within the teams we grew really close. Feedback from the other students made the learning experience deeper than usual. It was especially refreshing to see how students from various backgrounds brought different approaches to the teams. So, I would highly recommend the ITP SED program to all of you, especially to those coming from outside of Aalto University.

After an academic year the idea of spending the whole summer studying doesn’t maybe sound as the most attractive option. During the sunny summer days I also didn’t want to attend just normal lectures where you only sit down and listen to the professors. SED was something else and I was really happy and pleased with my choice.
The intensive three week courses and especially the hands-on working style on the courses are something you can’t normally have in your university studies. All the theory and different methods learned in the courses were put right away in use in the form of different exercises and in the project work that was done through the whole summer.
The project work involved a lot of work but it was really rewarding to see how this kind of projects move through different phases from the beginning till the end. In the end of the summer our team was really satisfied when we finally after 3,5 months of hard work had the final outcome of our project in our hands.
The summer wasn’t anyway only studying and working. The best part of SED was the whole big picture. The free time activities were great and I got a bunch of new experiences and met a lot of interesting people.
Now after a couple of months I still think I couldn’t have spent the summer in a better way.
